Discover all the charm of La Rochelle on a holiday organised with family or friends on the Atlantic coast. This Charente-Maritime town is renowned for its friendly atmosphere, with a wide range of activities for all ages. Book your holiday rental in La Rochelle from one of the many destinations listed on Clévacances.
The flavours of Charente-Maritime are symbolised by local produce and seafood. Among the specialities you could discover on your holiday is jonchée d'Aunis. This white fresh cheese made from cow's milk is shaped like a spindle. It can be enjoyed as a starter or with dessert, either honeyed or sweetened.
If you're a fan of molluscs, turn to oysters from Ile de Ré or Marennes from Oléron. You can choose between eating them raw, seasoned with a vinaigrette, or hot, served stuffed. The Atlantic seabed is also home to scallops, which are quite similar to the succulent coquilles Saint-Jacques. In La Rochelle, you can nibble on a soft, golden biscuit for breakfast or a snack: the galette charentaise. You're sure to enjoy this sweet treat made with Angelica, an emblematic plant of the Marais Poitevin.
In fact, the best local produce from La Rochelle is on sale to the public at the town's central market. A visit to this market could be the first thing you do during your stay, as you'll discover the friendly atmosphere created by the merchants. A must for any tourist is a visit to the Old Port of La Rochelle. It is characterised by its two medieval towers and the Gabut lift bridge, highlighted in the evening by sophisticated lighting. During your stroll through the town centre, you'll have the chance to admire the arcaded streets, the town houses and two religious buildings. These are Saint-Louis Cathedral and Saint-Sauveur Church, both of which attract large numbers of visitors every year. For a different kind of aquatic experience, visit the Aquarium de La Rochelle. Here you can see barracudas, guitar rays, turtles and various jellyfish, as well as sharks in a dedicated aquarium. The Natural History Museum invites travellers to immerse themselves in science. It houses some remarkable naturalist and ethnographic collections. Your holiday can also be synonymous with sporting activities and walks in the fresh air. You'll have the opportunity to go canoeing on the Canal de Marans.
There are also plenty of pleasures to be had around La Rochelle. These include, for example, a trip to the sumptuous Île de Ré. It is home to beaches of all kinds and boasts an exceptional environment frequented by tens of thousands of birds, the Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve. There are some lovely holiday accommodation with swimming pool on the Ile-de-Ré. Among the other places of interest on this piece of land, don't forget to snap a photo of the Baleines lighthouse at the western tip of the island.
Just 15 of kilometres to the south is the seaside resort of Chatellailon-Plage. Your holiday rental in La Rochelle will only be a ten-minute drive from this commune. There is a thalassotherapy centre where you can enjoy relaxing treatments. Chatellailon-Plage also has a family-friendly aquatic centre. You can enjoy the outdoor pools while your children have fun on the various slides.
