Located in the north-east of the Manche département, Barfleur has a population of 534. The only Manche village to have been awarded the title of "Most beautiful village in France", it is also an active fishing port and anchorage that you can visit. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should rent in this part of Normandy.
What to visit in Barfleur and the surrounding area?
Living through the seasons from scallop and mussel fishing, this is Barfleur's main square to discover. Commonly referred to as "The Pearl of the Val de Saire", this 19th-century port inspired, among others, the painter Paul Signac with his work "The Port of Barfleur".
A few steps from your accommodation, the Gatteville lighthouse provides a warning of the strong currents in the raz du village. It is the second largest lighthouse in France, standing 75 metres high and with 365 steps to the top. After climbing to the top, you'll have a breathtaking view of the Val de Saire and the English Channel. You can also visit its semaphore, a place where optical signals are used to communicate with ships. Note that in the event of a storm or strong winds, visits to the Gatteville lighthouse may be prohibited.
A must-see maritime park in Cherbourg, the Cité de la mer will amaze young and old alike with its aquariums and various activities. Put yourself in the shoes of a submariner with a visit to the submarine "Le Redoutable". Or relive a moment from the town's past with the "Titanic, return to Cherbourg" attraction.
A Romanesque church that has suffered damage through the vagaries of time and battles, Saint-Nicolas church is now a place of worship where the stained glass windows offer a dazzling light show. The distinctive feature of this monument is that it has a steeple without a spire and an octagonal domed axis chapel.
Living as the marshes do, the landscapes on offer are constantly changing. You'll be able to take a host of photos that can create memories of your escapades, taking in, for example, the sentier des quatre manoirs, located 10 km from Barfleur church, or the Gatteville lighthouse for an overall view of the coast.
The "blonde de Barfleur", a characteristic mussel of the village as it has yellow flesh, has been banned from consumption since 2016. In fact, harvesting is prohibited in order to allow a certain amount of time for the renewal of 4 natural beds, of which Barfleur is one. However, during your stay you can sample fish and seafood in various restaurants such as Le Safran in Barfleur, or La Bisquine located in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.
Carried out in summer, this music festival attracts more and more people every year. The programme features a range of musical styles, from jazz to rock and electro. It therefore caters for all age groups, making it a flagship activity for your holiday if your stay in Barfleur takes place during this period; and that's whether you're on your own, with friends or as a family.
Whether you enjoy a relaxing moment on the sand of a beach, or a bit of adrenaline by sailing, 3 beaches in Barfleur (la Masse, la Sambière, la plage de l'église) will allow you to make a relaxing break in your stay in search of unforgettable memories.
